Go Out & Have a Fun & Thrifty Weekend Adventure
It’s Friday and the weekend is almost here. Have any fun plans for this weekend? No? Well, you’re in the right place, because I’m about to suggest a ton of fun and thrifty things for you to do this weekend.
One of the things the boyfriend and I enjoy doing the most is just going out and exploring the city of Chicago. We liked going to places we’ve never been before and finding awesome places in the nooks and crannies of the city. The best part is, we have a lot of fun in the process. What’s even better? Exploring is really cheap–a lot of times it’s even free.
No matter if you live in a big city or a small town, you should be able to do most of these near by (or within a reasonable drive). Check out these suggestions, and let me know if you have any of your own.
Visit a Museum, Zoo, Aquarium, or Event
Bank of America has it’s Museums On Us promotion this weekend (June 5th & 6th) for cardholders. That gives you free admission at select museums across the US.
Target is continuing it’s sponsorship of free and reduced price events. This year they’re boasting 2,200 free events and 120 museums, so you’re bound to find something free or cheap near you.
Check with museums in your area, many have free days or other ways to pay reduced ticket prices.
Visit a Park Near You
US National Parks have free entrance days to their parks again this year. This weekend (June 5th & 6th) there’s free admission to all their parks.
Look for parks in your own city or state to visit. Who knows what interesting things you may find (a few weeks ago we discovered a bird and butterfly sanctuary hidden away in one of our parks). Pack a lunch and a blanket and have a picnic or enjoy some hiking, bird watching, sight seeing, or swimming.
Discover a New Restaurant
I know going out to eat is usually not the best way to save money, but there are ways to lighten the costs. Restaurant.com has Gift Cards starting at $15 for $25 cards. Use code EAT and save 70% Off thru 6/7/10. Take that as an opportunity to go out and try a new restaurant.
Look for other specials and deals in your area–some restaurants have discounts for students, special buffets or lunch specials, or even coupons. Try a new cuisine and explore new flavors.
Go to a Farmers Market
I love farmers markets. There’s no easier way to purchase fruit and veggies straight from the field. And the prices are usually cheaper than the grocery store!
There’s usually more to farmers markets than just produce. There are fresh meats, canned goods, plants and seedlings, plus other organic and natural products. If you’ve never gone to one before, you should definitely check it out and stock up on some fresh produce.
Explore Thrift Store & Antique Shops
I love secondhand shops of every kind. Not only can you get a good deal on used items, but who knows what interesting treasures you’ll find!
Pick a passion–be it books, clothing, music, whatever–and you’ll probably be able to find a secondhand store that specializes in that area. If not, just go to a local thrift store and check out the merchandise.
There may be even more opportunities in your area (farms, lakes, beaches, camping grounds, etc), these are only a few examples. I’d love to hear any of your ideas as well!

A Great Week in Thifty-ness
I post a lot of tips, offers, and opportunities on this blog with the hope that sharing my thrifty ways will help my readers to develop their own habits to save money and still enjoy life and having fun. To put it all in perspective, I thought I’d share how utilizing these tips in my life benefited me this week.
Freebies
I received a free sample of Eos’ organic sweet mint lip balm (unfortunately that sample is no longer available). I love this lip balm so much. I hate dry lips and I’m prone to them, so I’m kind of a Chapstick junkie. I think I’ll be switching brands now.
Another sample I got this week was Zyrtec OTC.
I bought four Snickers bars, for free, thanks to the coupons I received from Mars’ Chocolate Relief Act. (I am so sad that promotion is over)
I got to attend a free screening of the movie Whip It, which both the boyfriend and I enjoyed very much. If you have a chance to see this movie–especially for free–take it! It was funny, fresh, and original.
Last night the boyfriend and I saw local theater production for free thanks to Free Night of Theater.
This weekend we’ll be heading out to a museum for free thanks to Bank of America’s Museums on us.
Money Made
I earned $0.12 through Youdata, just for viewing advertisements. Sure it’s not a lot, but that’s free money that goes directly to my Paypal account.
This week I received a $5 check from Opinion Outpost and I have another $7 check on the way. I’m almost ready to request my next check–and this is all for surveys I’ve taken in the past two weeks.
I received my second $5 Amazon.com gift card from Swagbucks. I’ve been a member for less than two months and I’m impressed by how much I’ve earned just by using their search engine.
I earned $9.60 from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk by doing some hits in my free time.
Cheap Fun
Tomorrow morning, we’re going to head over to AMC to take advantage of A.M Cinema and see the new documentary Capitalism: A Love Store for only $6 (half the price of a normal ticket).
