Site Update: New Comment Policy
Hello all! I know it has been very quiet around here lately, but I’m still around and have some great content planned for this week.
I just wanted to announce that I’m making a small change to the site functionality that shouldn’t effect everyone too much. Unfortunately this site gets a lot of spam comments and I have a hard time wading through them all to make sure nothing important accidentally slips into the spam bin. Lately I’ve noticed a pattern that certain older posts that are unlikely to receive new comments (like past movie screenings or freebie posts) will be targeted pretty heavily by spammers during a certain period of time.
What I’m doing to combat this is just turning off comments for those posts. I am leaving the comments on for posts that receive a lot of comments and on going discussions (Knowledge Panel, anyone?) so it really shouldn’t effect anyone.
Just a note: the first time you comment on the site, it automatically holds the comment for approval just so I can verify you’re a legit commenter. Once the first comment has been approved, all of your other comments will automatically be accepted.
The Saga of the Missing Router Begins
Well, the new internet router was supposed to be delivered yesterday. In fact, according to USPS online tracking, it was delivered yesterday at 1:21 PM. Problem is, I didn’t get a package. I was home during that time and there were no packages delivered. We didn’t even get regular mail yesterday.
This morning I gave USPS customer service a call and spoke with a very nice young lady who said she could open a case for me and the post office would investigate it and I’d hear something in 2 business days. Considering it’s Thursday, that means this could drag on into next week (and knowing my local post office, probably longer). We had a few problems with our local post office before, but not one like this, so I’m perplexed as to what happened.
Some of my guesses are that the package was just delivered to the wrong building, or some shady employee marked as delivered and stole it (we’ve had some problems with netflix DVDs disapearing every few months). If it’s either of those cases then I doubt I’ll ever see this router. Hopefully someone just scanned the package wrong and it’s sitting around in the post office somewhere.
Now we’re just waiting, and I don’t know when I’ll have internet back. In better news, I’ve had two job interviews in the past week. One is sort of a sure thing (it was a rehiring interview for a seasonal job I had last year), the other I don’t know, but seems promising. Hopefully by the time I have internet back I’ll have some great news. We’ll see.
For now, we’ll just wait.
It showed up today. I guess the person delivering it couldn’t get into our building, but decided to mark it as delivered. Le sigh. But I’m back online.
Dead Routers Mean No Internet!
On Sunday our router died. It was very dramatic–not really. I was on my computer, using the internet, and then suddenly the internet just disappeared. When I went to investigate, the router was just dead, completely non-responsive, no lights blinking, nothing. I tried a few power cords (because we had to replace our power cord in August), but it looked like it was the end of the line for the router, after only two and a half years.
Because AT&T routers are such quality products, they cost over $100 and you have to order them from AT&T. Considering the first one didn’t last that long, I didn’t want to make a big investment. Instead, I went to eBay (using some stolen wifi, shhhh) spent a few hours bidding, and got a new one for less than $42 dollars including shipping.
Now we are waiting for it to arrive (hopefully by Thursday), but until then I don’t really have internet and won’t really be posting. I’m horribly behind on Nanowrimo (about 10,000+ words behind) and I have some freelance work to do, so I’m going to take this internet-less time to do that.
Once I’m back up and running I’ll return to a more regular posting schedule.
Thank you for your patience.
Not Dead
I’m sorry things have been a little dead around here lately, but I assure you, dear readers, that I am not dead. I believe I mentioned before that I started a new job. Well, I’m working in a tax office (not as a tax preparer, so please do not ask me any tax related questions), and this is one of the busy times, so I’ve jumped right in to working lots and lots. It will slow down a bit more in two or so weeks, and I’ll have more time off. This week though, I’ve barely had time to check my email.
So, I hope to be back to regularly scheduled posting shortly, and do some posting this weekend.
Happy New Year!
As the final hours are ticking down to 2010, I wanted to wish all of my readers at Happy New Year!
This past year has been a challenge for me financially (losing my job and what not), and I know I wouldn’t have been able to survive without my thrifty ways and the tips I’ve garnered from the other bloggers I read. I hope my posts have been as helpful to you, my dear readers.
I plan for a great year ahead, with more freebies, money savings tips, and ways to make extra money. Hopefully you’ll stick around, maybe even subscribe to the RSS feed so you don’t miss out on anything.
So Happy New Year everyone! I hope we will all be happy, prosperous, and thrifty throughout 2010!
(Also, sorry for the lack of posts since I returned to Chicago. The boyfriend caught a cold while I was gone and promptly passed it on to me when I returned. It’s not the worst, but it’s enough to kill my energy and motivation. I hope to be up to full speed soon.)
I'm a 20-something living in the big expensive city of Chicago. I'm post-college and bouncing between underemployment and unemployment, while trying my best to be thrifty, save money, pay off my 6 digit student loan debt, and still have fun and enjoy life. I live with my boyfriend, a rabbit, and a chinchilla.
