I had to run some errands this morning, which is why I’m getting this up now. We had two 90 degree days in Chicago this week, but it definitely feels like fall today and some of the leaves are starting to turn… It makes me nervous about winter coming. It’s basically my least favorite season, and to make matters worse, I live in Chicago.

Let’s just enjoy fall weather and some great freebies.

Patio Garden 2010 Week 23: Tomatoes, Peppers, & Basil

I know, I know. I haven’t done a patio garden update in a couple weeks. Honestly there just hasn’t been much going on to report.

We’re down now to tomatoes, peppers, and basil. The tomatoes and peppers are still suffering from the red spider mites, but the plants are still trucking along. They’re producing, flowering, and growing new leaves.

The tomatoes have been hit the hardest by the little mites. I picked 33 cherry tomatoes yesterday. The plants would probably be producing a lot more if they weren’t infested, but still this is not bad at all.

Our peppers still haven’t gotten big enough to pick, but they’re still growing. I have no clue what we’ll do with them once we have them. I’ll figure out something…

And the basil just goes on and on and on.

I don’t know if I’ll do updates every week now, since there isn’t much to report. I will do these posts periodically. No video this week. Maybe this weekend we’ll get one up. I can’t make any promises since I’m not really the one who is in charge of all that.

For those who are new, this year the boyfriend and I are doing a little container gardening experiment where we are trying to grow various herbs and vegetables on our patio. We live in the city of Chicago, so traditional gardening is out of the question. You can subscribe to the RSS feed to instantly receive the posts each week and also check out our previous posts. Get Ready for Free Night of Theater 2010

I enjoyed Free Night of Theater so much last year, that I’m ecstatic to do it again this October.

Free Night of Theater is a program that aims to introduce new people to the thrill of live theater through free tickets to participating shows at theaters across the country. The shows are during the month of October, but you can start reserving tickets today.

Each region has a different start date for reserving tickets, so check your region. This is US only and not available in every city, but if it’s near you, take advantage of it!

There are some restrictions: you can only sign up for one show per person, but you can get up to 2 tickets. The way we work it is I sign up for a show and my boyfriend signs up for a show, so as a pair we can go to see 2 different shows.

Free Movie Screenings: Conviction, Let Me In, The Grace Card, & Freakonomics

…and Freebie Friday gets even better. I’m doing all four of these screenings in one post because a lot of the cities are already “sold out” though there are a few available, and the last screenings isn’t technically free.

Anyway, first up we have Fox Searchlight’s Conviction. Plot description via IMDB: A working mother puts herself through law school in an effort to represent her brother, 1who has been wrongfully convicted of murder and has exhausted his chances to appeal his conviction through public defenders. The movie stars Hillary Swank and Sam Rockwell.

This is a Gofobo screening. Click on your city if it’s available, fill out your info, and print your pass.

The following cities were available at the time of posting:

  • Dallas, TX
  • Denver, CO
  • Los Angeles, CA
  • San Antonio, TX

The next screening is Never Let Me Go. Plot description via IMDB: As children, Ruth, Kathy and Tommy, spend their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. As they grow into young adults, they find that they have to come to terms with the strength of the love they feel for each other, while preparing themselves for the haunting reality that awaits them.

This is another Gofobo screening.

Cities available at the time of posting:

  • Dallas, TX
  • Denver, CO
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • St. Louis, MO

The next movie is The Grace Card. Plot description via IMDB:In racially charged Memphis, Tennessee, a searing personal tragedy has left police officer Mac McDonald a bitter, angry soul, blaming a long downward spiral on minorities, “the system” and God Himself.

This movie is hosting it’s own screening and there looks to be about 25+ screenings across the country, so I can’t list all the cities. Go to the site to RSVP and sign up.

The next screening–which isn’t entirely free–is for Freakonomics. Plot description via IMDB: Some of the world’s most innovative documentary filmmakers will explore the hidden side of everything.

They’re doing an experiment with pay-what-you-want screenings in select cities on September 22nd. You can pay anywhere from one cent to up to $100. Go here to fill out a survey. Then it takes you to Movietickets.com to buy your tickets.

The following cities are available:

  • Embarcadero – San Francisco
  • Kendall Square Cinema – Cambridge (Boston)
  • Landmark Chez Artiste – Denver
  • Landmark Century Centre Cinema – Chicago
  • Landmark Sunshine Cinema – New York City
  • Landmark Magnolia Pictures – Dallas
  • Landmark E Street Cinema – Washington, DC
  • Landmark Harvard Exit – Seattle
  • Ritz at the Bourse – Philadelphia
  • The Landmark – Los Angeles

The boyfriend and I will actually be going to this one and we will pay more than a penny.
